In the video accompaniment to Martin Evening's book Adobe Photoshop CS2 for Photoraphers, he mentions a good tool for setting the exposure and shadow sliders on the "Adjust" tab in Camera RAW.
If you choose to uncheck the "auto" feature and set your own levels, you can hold down the option/alt key while dragging the slider to put the image into a threshold display mode. This makes it easier to judge just where the highlights start to clip and what the best setting for the slider would be. Simply release the mouse to complete the action.
The same feature also applies to the "shadows" slider just below exposure.
I think Martin's books are the best PS books on the market, but did anyone who uses ACR really not know this feature existed?

My apologies--personally, I didn't know. But I'm relatively new to the technology.

No apology needed. It is a very useful feature, so if it is not widely known you should definitely be putting the word out.
I was just amazed that people might have been managing without knowing that.

I didn't know about this and it is very useful.
Thank you for pointing it out.
I had been getting by without it, but this certainly speeds things up.
I have an older version of Evening's book. It's one of the few good ones and it is very good.
