Some great non-standard brush effects are available in Photoshop and Elements by leveraging the Layer Styles feature. Start by going to the Layers palette and create a new blank layer (click on the blank page icon at the bottom of the palette). This will create a new transparent layer containing no pixel data. This will be your paint layer. Now go to your Layer Styles palette (or Styles palette if you're in Photoshop) and from the drop down select the Complex library. Click on any of the styles to apply it to your transparent layer. You shouldn't see any change in your image. Now select the Brush tool and start painting on the Layer you created. What you'll see as you paint is the style that you applied to that Layer.
