This is a little-known and unpublished shortcut in Adobe Photoshop CS for quickly making a selection of only the highlights or shadows in an image. To quickly make a highlights selection of an image (layer): Cmd + Option + ~ (if you are on Windows: Ctrl + Alt + ~). Note: to select just the shadows, use this shortcut followed by the Select menu -> Invert Selection command (Cmd + Shift + I, Ctrl + Shift + I for Windows).
