Adobe Photoshop Elements 3.0 has been announced! There is a lot to like in this new version, and some key distinctions to be aware of. One critical change is that (unlike the previous versions) there are price and feature differences between the Macintosh and Windows platforms this time around.
The main feature difference is that the Windows version includes organizer features (ala Photoshop Album technology). Because of the additional organizer functionality, the Windows version has a different welcome screen when you launch the app that presents the additional options available.
One of the many new additions in this release is a completely new and streamlined user interface (UI). There is now a Photo Bin that allows you to easily switch between the images you have open, a single column toolbox, and a Palette Bin that allows you to easily organize your palettes in one location.
No worries if you prefer the older UI with floating palettes or the old two-column toolbox as it’s easy to customize the UI to retain those components.
Here is the short list of many of the the cool new items in PSE3:
• Camera Raw (plug-in that allows users to open Camera Raw files from high end digital cameras)
• 16 bit support
• Improved & New tools: Red Eye Removal (one click done!), Cookie Cutter (great for scrapbookers), Healing brush, and the Spot Healing Brush
• Quick Fix mode which includes a new Smart Fix feature that allows you to instantly improve lighting, contrast, color problems, and image sharpening
• Noise Reduction filter
• Enhanced File Browser (much like Photoshop CS)
• Photo Browser (Win only) that allows you to stack like files together, create version sets, and organize your images via tags and collections
• Also available in the Photo Browser (Organizer side of PSE3, Win only) is a cool new Photo Review and Compare feature as well as new sharing capabilities such as sending your photos in an HTML email (no more fumbling with attachments).
• Creations wizard (Win only) that allows you to generate things from slideshows to video CDs to calendars
There is a lot more but those are the biggies in a nutshell. Check out the screen captures below.
